There are two titles that both come out this week:

World Championship Poker (http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/243976.asp)

Texas Hold 'Em Poker (http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/245508.asp)

I thought I saw a top 20 sales listing that had 2 PC poker games in it. One being by Donahoe Digital (War: Age of Imperialism) which is in the running for an IGF Award which I own.

Hold 'Em has become such a huge phenomenon and I was wondering if anyone was picking these up. I cannot imagine the A.I. for either could be very good, but it would definitely be fun to have while on the go.

There are editions for the other platforms coming in a few weeks as well, but if I am home and have the time I would be playing the real thing on my PC.

Playing poker for fake money is like having sex with a pillow.

What if that's all you got? On both counts.

Actually, there have been some extremely sophisticated poker simulators around for a while now. The good ones are really intended more as learning tools than games. You can play thousands of hands in a fraction of the time you could at the tables or online. Study the odds, test out different playing styles, drill yourself on odds, replay certain scenarios repeatedly, etc.

Most of those simulators stink at simulating human play. They're sophisticated, in that you can configure lots of things about how various "people" play, but that's nowhere near an AI being able to play reasonable poker against a human.

Right now, we've got bots that can play heads up with reasonable skill, because the "universe" is much smaller.

There have been attempts to write bots that can play in 10-handed games, and from most reports, they suck. That's probably more a function of the programmer, but even the best folks working on this stuff haven't gotten all that far.
