It would have been better if they released either a mouse, or a bird as well.

CHAOS!

What was interesting was watching the cat's natural "always land on the feet" ability go completely haywire towards the end of the video. It's a fairly good demonstration of a runaway positive feedback loop.

My god, I was laughing so hard I think my neighbours will look at me funny from now on.

That zero-G movie is just cruel, however.

Bye,
Steven

That's hilarious.

I realize I'm a dork, but I thought that zero-g cat was too mean to be really funny. Not surprising that the USAF took the video down off their site, I bet they're getting hate mail like nobody's business from rabid cat-lovers and PETA-types.

WTF? Why was that bloke throwing poor kitty against a wall? To test how pissed off you can get a cat? Poor thing was obviously terrified... look at it cling to that woman.

To test whether lack of gravity screws up the "land on your feet" reflex is the best theory I've heard. Doesn't seem like a well-controlled experiment, though.

I'm with you. It was kind of interesting to see the land-on-your-feet thing not working, or working, or whatever it was doing, but I mainly just felt bad for the cat.

Yeah, I don't get it. It definitely looked like they were trying to test the land-on-your-feet thing, but the whole thing had such a slapped-together look that I almost wonder whether the people involved just decided themselves to do this, rather than it being "official." But then you figure no way could they get a plane unless it were official, and besides the video was apparently posted on the USAF website originally, so it must be official. Weird. You would think that if someone said "Sir, I want to take a cat up into our zero-G plane and throw it at the wall and see if it turns to land," the obvious response would be either "No" or "No, and please report to the base psychologist."

Again, I realize I'm being a dork. I'm in favor of animal experimentation if it will help humans live better lives (not sure how this would qualify, but who knows), and much worse things get done to animals than this. That cat probably has a better life than many cats, despite being thrown around in a zero-G plane. But I can't help but feel that a large part of the motivation for the experiment was a cruel sort of "Watch me freak this cat out" thing.

Yeah, I thought that it was a bit mean, too. I mean, you don't need to take a cat into zero-G training to tell you that a lack of gravity can affect a creature's ability to orient itself in space--that's a pretty commonly known fact. And the idea of seeing if a cat can land on its feet in zero-G is pretty dumb anyway, since it's not like the cat is ever going fall in zero-G (unless you throw him at a wall).

That second video was damn funny, though I guess in a way it was just as mean (at least for the poor guy who just had his femoral artery severed). But his scream of pure, utter agony when the cat jumps onto his leg just made me laugh. I guess being mean to people is okay, even if being mean to cats isn't.

I guess being mean to people is okay, even if being mean to cats isn't.

That's because cats are better than people.

Exactly! You know, I really was, all through that video, thinking to myself "Drop the leash, dummy. Seriously. Drop it. No, I'm not kidding. That cat is going to kick your ass if you don't drop that leash. You better -- whoops. See? Retard."
