View Full Version : Anyone here paying monthly fees for more than one MMORG?

I'm kind of curious. I only have time to not play one MMORG. Tha happens to be City of Heroes, of which I put all of 5 minutes into in the last 1 1/2 months.

So does anyone pay for more than 1 MMORG? If you do, do you actually play both?! See i can see paying for 1 MMORG and playing a btea of another you're not actually paying for... but 2 or more seems difficult.

I'm just looking at World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and Saga of Ryzom all beign quality MMORGS available... And I don't think I want to give up my CoH characters.

I stick with one MMORPG at a time mostly because the amount of time one needs to invest in such games is quite a bit to really do well in it. I feel like I'm half-assing my way through the games if I try to straddle more than one MMORPG at a time since I can't focus on one and put the most into it.

I'm playing WoW right now and I have a pretty full plate.

My roommates pays for two accounts on the same MMORPG though.

There are actually several MMORPGs that i have the time to not play.

Yea, Jon same here. Seems to me after the end of this year, the MMORG market cannot possibly expand anymore (except in non - U.S. markets).

It's not totally uncommon for my wife and I to have active subs to a couple of games at the same time.

Right now I would consider myself as paying monthly fees for more than one MMO, even though I'm only playing Dark Age of Camelot. That's because to really have any fun with DAoC you have to pay for a buffbot too.

I would definitely never pay monthly fees to more than one MMO. The whole premise of an MMO is that you can blow lots and lots of time on it. Why would I want to pay for two virtually infinite timesinks? :)

As far as City of Heroes is concerned, to my knowledge the developers have extremely positive policies about character retention. Even though I expect to never play CoH again, if I come back in a year I expect that my characters will still be there.

This is it exactly. I have a CoH sub, and am in the WoW beta; I haven't even touched any other games since I got into WoW. Juggling the two consumes entirely too much time. I am eager for the beta to actually end so I can return to my more regular gaming schedule (and finally bring up my lvl 23 hero to respec).

Just for reference, we took a survey which asked this question:

How many different MMOG subscriptions do you have active?

- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
- More
- Does not wish to respond

From our poll results, it's *very* popular to have at least two MMO's running at a time.

In my case, I'm terminally at two - since I kept a Toontown account open for the kids :)

From the wording of that question, Walt, you may have just picked up answers of two subscriptions for your players with buffbots. I consider myself to have two different subscriptions, one for my infiltrator and one for my cleric in camelot.

If the question was worded differently, like "How many different MMOG's do you subscribe to" then I would think you'd have better results.

I have 2 currently. I'll temporarily pop up to 3, but then I feel stupid for having 1 or 2 accounts on games I don't play, so I cancel one. I had CoH, SWG, and EQ. I finally gave up on EQ because I just can't muster the enthusiasm to continue in the direction the game's been heading for the last 4 expansions, no matter how many friends I have there.

I'm holding out on SWG to see if the space expansion is any good. I enjoyed it for a good three months, but I've come to realize that my life as a crafting class is going to devolve into a series of running around and checking things then logging off, and that's not compelling. It was fun while I was trying to bootstrap my way to successfulness, but once I was actually to the point where I had merchants and was making money I lost motivation, and the combat isn't exactly good enough to make me want to switch over to combat. So unless the space expansion is a lot of fun it's going to go away.

That just leaves CoH, which I've payed for yet not played for the last 3 months, but which I can't seem to bear to cancel because I still think they're doing pretty much everything right. (Except for that pesky bit of making a game that's compelling enough to actually make me log in - but I'm willing to believe that's a temporary thing for me at the moment. And I at least still get the "free" comic book for my $15/month.)

I currently have subs open to DAOC, EQ, SWG and the WoW beta. I've had much more - I tend to dabble, but when doing bills I tend to be reminded "Oh yeah, I haven't logged into this one in months".

DAOC is kind of a given, being that I work there. SWG I haven't played in months, but my wife uses the account for merchant slots. EQ I keep open because I have a good friend there who refuses to play any other game.

I suspect most people make MMO subscription decisions for similarly trivial reasons.

The previous two questions in the poll were:

What subscription based large scale MMOG's released before Camelot have you played? Please note if Camelot was your first MMOG.

Check all that apply:

And:

In addition to the above - what games released after Camelot have you tried? Please include any beta testing experience you may have.

Check all that apply:

And the following question was:

What upcoming MMOG's do you anticipate playing?

Check all that apply:

So, in context, fairly clear that we were discussing different MMO's.

All I've got is EQ2 for the moment. I have no interest at all in any of the others that are released.

At one point a couple of months ago I was paying for FFXI and CoH, but I've cancelled FFXI. CoH has lost a little of its sheen for me, lately but I love the fact that I can just log in for an hour any time and solo whenever I like, instead of having to allocate an entire evening or weekend day to get anything done.

FFXI is a very professionally made game with beautiful attention to detail and many wonderful features, but its perfect-group-only extremely slow level grind is not for me, I ran out of interest in the high 30s.

In the past I was also paying for AC2, E&B, and ATITD at the same time, but of course I don't pay for either of the first two, since I work for Turbine now, and since E&B went bye-bye. As for ATITD, it was certainly worth my time and money for a while, and I hope ATITD round 2 goes well, but after a couple of months, I just didn't want to make any more bricks, if you know what I mean....

So does anyone pay for more than 1 MMORG? If you do, do you actually play both?!

Yes.
3 UO Accounts
2 SWG Accounts
2 COH Accounts

I recently cancelled a EQ and Planetside account (For COH and SWG).
I've been to lazy to cancel the UO accounts, and planned on it.

On average when I do play, I usually powergame weekends dual-boxing with perhaps 5 hours a week between accounts during peak time at work.
When I get bored with one game I toggle back to the other.

I'll probably lose the SWG or COH accounts to try WoW.

At one point I kept 6 separate EQ accounts running, plus a DAoC, and a Planetside (pre all-in-one package).

The Sony all in one deal (EQ, EQ2, PS) will probably stick around for awhile and possibly a WoW account to get a feel for how that game is.

My wife and I have had three accounts, spread over one or more MMOs, for the last couple of years. I usually dabble in 2, and she consistently plays one (and usually outlevels me while I keep restarting with alts).

Right now, we have 2 DAOC accounts, and I left CoH 6 weeks ago to begin dabbling in Anarchy Online. The Anarchy account will almost definitely get transferred to either WoW or EQ2.

I have before. But only while I was trying out a new game. Usually EQ and a new one. Then play the new one a while and cancel EQ. Then get sick of it, and go back to EQ and mope around a while waiting for another contender. Repeat.

Not paying for any right now though...

Currently I'm at two accounts: FFXI, which I play frequently; and SWG, which I recently reopened. I just cancelled my AO account because I'm already spread too thin; besides, I know that my AO characters will languish undisturbed in Limbo while my attention is elsewhere.

I am pretty certain that SWG (which is on its third go-'round with me) will get the heave-ho as soon as the WoW open beta starts. Things will get sticky when EQ2 goes live, as I have some ex-AO player friends that are keen to start an EQ2 guild with me.

I can't see myself flushing FFXI any time soon; I'm pushing 1000 hours of play time on it now and still enjoy it. So that probably means shelving one of WoW or EQ2 and playing it later.

At one point, I believe I had active accounts in four different MMOGs. But I was clearly insane then. :)

I'm currently playing DAoC a little now and then. I found myself goofing
around with the New Frontiers beta that we just got here today, and I
predict I'll be spending far too much time on that over a few weekends :/

I'm probably going to check out EQ2. If WoW has any redeeming features
when released, I may check it out. Ryzom might be different now from
last beta I played, and CoH will be investigated again sometime soon.

But after the end of the year, I'll only be paying for DAoC w/buffbot and
one other game, tops. I'm having trouble focusing when I have 20+
characters ;)

What they should do is come up with a universal billing system. So you pay $15 a month, and you can play whatever online game you want. At the end of the month, it calculates a percentage of play time and distributes the funds to each provider. Of course, the system would have to make sure you are only able to play one game at a time. This would allow everyone to participate in everything for one fee. Never going to happen, but it would be possible for a place like Turbine to offer Asheron's Call 1, Asheron's Call 2, D&D Online, and Middle Earth Online all for one fee.

According to what I'm reading, the of actual player accounts seems really out fo whack. That 200,000 people a MMORG may boast, could actually be closer to 100,000 or even 50,000. 7 accounts for 1 player. That's unbelievable.

Never more than two, although I've had two accounts running in one game + a single subscription in another at various points.

Currently it's just my single COH subscription and the WOW beta.

When WOW goes live I'll probably drop COH, since I'm no longer playing at this point. I'm sure I'll wind up with two WOW accounts, or a WOW and EQ2 account over the long term. I like participating in MMOs just to see how the community develops, the world evolves, the balancing is handled, etc. I probably spend more time with that than I do actually playing in the end. Plus I like to make alts.

I always pay for more than one.

In the past it was DAoC + random games I tried. Now I cancelled it a month ago and I'm currently subscribed to FFXI (which I pay, but not play) and I was awaiting WoW. Plus I'm paying SWG just because they invited me to the beta of JTL.

After the forced server thing I won't buy WoW so I need something else (since I'll hardly stay in SWG) and I'm wondering if it's the case to re-subscribe to DAoC for Catacombs but for now the idea just gave me very bad feelings.

After leaving a mmorpg I always found very, very hard to go back.

never can afford as much time as i want to for 1 mmo, so its quite unlikely i pay for 2 mmos at the same time.

most of friends also dont pay for 2 games at the same time. unless they are in the middle of switching from 1 game to another then ya.
