This touches on something I've never really understood: why should the fact that someone is the son, father, next door neighbour or third cousin twice removed of a public figure make their political opinions any more or less worth paying attention to? I can see a certain degree of irony in some cases, certainly. Is that the appeal?

Through the theory of Six Degrees of separation I 'know' Senator Kerry .. then again I also 'know' President Bush.

I say vote for that other guy.. the crazy one.

Some of it is just nonsense nepotism & "I knew this celebrity politician," but I think part of it is the rational assumption that someone's son or daughter, in general, would have a pretty close take on what their parents would think.

As to the Reagan & Eisenhower kids, I have no goddamn idea if they're right.

In Ron Reagan Jr.'s case, he had many private conversations with his father. I'd say that makes him as much as an expert as anybody as to what President Reagan believed.

Ditto with Dwight Jr. He actually worked in the White House during his father's administration. I can only imagine that he had many candid, father-son style discussions with his father. The kind of stuff that historians and aides can only dream of.
