But they make up %40 of the population and %100 of the minimum wage earners!

Silly goob, you can pay illegals LESS than minimum wage!

We shouldn't have any illegal aliens getting paid anything. You wanna pry money outta rich people? Then shut down illegal immigration and you'll see a lot of jobs open up here.
Damn, a country that cannot control its borders ain't much of a country. :x

Illegals are willing to work as house cleaners, window washers, dish washers and other "demeaning" jobs that our local poor won't touch.

Not to mention they keep California's farm industry competitive.

There's an interesting theory in one Eric Schlosser's Reefer Madness that the endless supply of cheap labor from Mexico has been holding back the mechanization of the fruit industry. They've invented machines to pick virtually everything, but the labor's so cheap no one bothers. It is interesting that fruit is the one area of agriculture that hasn't changed much.

Is that book any good? I read and enjoyed Fast Food Nation, but haven't picked RM up yet. Is it worth it?

I liked it, but the section on illegal labor is the most boring part of the book imho.

But also the most good for you! :D
He writes only slightly less like a graduate student this time, but it's still a fascinating book.

Americans will do these jobs, just not for the substandard wages that illegals will accept.

Well, that's the problem, our "poor" don't have to work as long as Democrats are willing to subsidize them in return for votes.

Agreed! Let the invisible hand work here--stop illegal immigration, and then wages of these jobs would go up somewhat, enabling the lowerclass in this country to work for decent pay.
I'm not against Mexican immigrant labor, but it should be regulated. By no means should we be allowing illegals Social Security, tax refunds, and drivers licenses!
Bush was on the verge of implementing a Mexican guest worker program that was scuttled by 9/11.

What the hell are you talking about? Welfare has a work requirement. I think the only things left that don't have work requirements are medicaid and food stamps.

Now it does after the GOP Congress shoved it up Clinton's ass so many times it finally stuck.
The dichotomy of liberals screaming about low wages and liberals pushing for illegals to vote in state elections is just hilarious. If you want wages to go up, the illegals have to be pushed out, not encouraged. Basic supply and demand.

Oh, please. Clinton ran on welfare reform in 1992 (look it up); he just made the mistake of trying healthcare first.
Who the hell wants illegals to vote? I sure don't.

Well, maybe trying first wasn't the mistake, but giving it to his unelected wife certainly was. Talk about a criticism magnet.

Yeah, there's an endless series of things he fucked up there. Oh well; I guess incrementalism will have to do.

If you have an undocumented illegal, and you give him a driver's license...
So...
Just document the fuckin guy instead. Get him earning legitimate wages and welcome him to the USA. What the fuck? Why go through the trouble to create a trail of documentation for someone who is "undocumented"?

Yep, that's pretty much it. I'm very much in favor of either giving them citizenship or tossing them out of the country ASAP. Trying to acknowledge a middle ground means the creation of a formalized American caste system, something I find mighty distasteful.

Same here, but good luck finding a politician willing to support that. It's the lesser of two evils in actual practice.

Well, someone has taken a shot at figuring out what could happen.

Overall I think the issue of illegal hispanic immigration is not going to ever be fully addressed. Just look at the situation in Florida with Cuban immigrants versus Haitian immigrants. The darker skinned nationality gets the short end of the stick there (setting foot on American soil, asylum, etc).
Listening to talk radio, I hear lots of code words and skirting of the issue in terms of trying to make illegal immigration a white vs. non-white issue. English First, English Only movements, etc. It's annoying because I perceive it to be hackwork trying to incite people for ratings/effect.
