for those who don't know, and probably don't care, espn nfl is actually sega award winning football with the espn name attached. This game looks really great and it's only $20 !!!

If you ever wanted to play a football game, but didn't want spend 50 bucks on one, this is the game to get.

Agreed. We had a thread about it already (two actually I think), but it comes out this Tuesday I think, so I guess it's worth mentioning again. I'll pick it up with my Sealab 2021 DVD after work.

I'm confused: are we still playing football in the year 25000? I would've thought we'd have moved on.

Okay, yeah, lame joke. Picking the game up next week.

Tuesday? Are you sure? I thought it didn't come out until August.

It's not so much the year 25000 as it is a dodgeball cannon.

I'm extremely excited about this one. I'll be leaving earlier than usual for work that day so I can go buy it.

I'm wondering. I noticed in the review that it has online league play. Does this mean we could have a league of QT3 people and play games, trade, and rad chat with eachother?

I would actually consider renewing my long since expired Xbox Live account if I could play in a good league with people I trusted to not drop offline once the game starts going south.

I'll be up for it, though I'm horrible at football. I have no concept of playcalling, the times I've played these games I always start out trying to pick plays but by halftime I'm just letting the game call them for me. But for $20, I'll spring for a good looking football game and maybe actually learn a thing or two this time around. I just wish Sega/ESPN was doing a college one this year.

I would be happy to play, I would say I am fairly advanced but I won't cheeze anyone with a running quarterback or anything. If we have a league I want the Redskins, I doubt I will get a lot of opposition after their crappy 6-10 season last year.

In response to someone's question in the other thread, I can't find it in any stores today. I imagine I'll grab it at lunch tomorrow. I like how when I asked if it was coming in today or tomorrow, they told me it was tomorrow and then gave me the "Would you like to preorder? It looks like we're only getting enough to cover our preorders" speech. If they're only getting enough to cover their preorders, how much good is it going to do me to preorder today?

Of course, they usually get more than their preorders and are just out to secure your sale with paranoia.

The spin I usually get is: "We're getting them later today, but, err, I think 'most' of them are reserved. Do you want to reserve so we can hold one for you?"

Of course, I think they'd tell you that no matter what, even if it was Barbie Virtual Chicken Pot Pie Bakery or The Sims: Empty Box and they had 100 spare copies coming in.

ShieldWolf, you mention that you'll be drawing names out of a hat and setting up matches. Aren't there some kind of online tournaments or something we'll be able to set up? I haven't looked into it, but I just assumed that sort of thing would be possible.

EB had the rights to start selling it last night. 6pm locally, every store was sold out within minutes. I'm serious, it was like an ESPN feeding frenzy or something.

I got the Xbox version, I'm good to go, and damn this game is really good (so far)

Just got my copy - there was a line of about 10 people ahead of me, and most of the store's copies of ESPN NFL 2k5 were for pre-orders, so I was worried they wouldn't have enough left by the time I got to the front. Turns out there were about 3 copies left for the XBox after I got mine.

I picked mine up at noon. The guy at the EB register said they got 60 of them in that morning. There were about ten of them behind him left to sell.

The Gamestop where I preordered mine from sold out pretty much by the end of the morning. Hopefully this 20$ plus coming out early gives ESPN the success they were looking for.

I had no problem picking up a copy at Best Buy after work, but then they weren't actually on the shelves yet either. I wandered over a few aisles and found an employee with a cart full of NFL 2k5s and Catwomans, she hadn't made it to the Xbox section yet.

I just saw at evilavatar.com that Coke is doing a promotion where you can shave another $10 off the purchase of any ESPN game priced at $19.95 or more. Of course, if you have to drink $10 worth of Coke, it ain't much of a deal, unless you drink a lot of that stuff already. Anyways, here's the URL: http://www.cokesports.com/home.jsp

My Best Buy didn't have them out either. I wound up picking mine up at Software Etc...

... where I was asked if I wanted to reserve a copy of Madden. This was the best-selling game of 2003. Am I really supposed to believe that stores won't order enough to fill the demand? What is going on?

On August 24, I know I'll be able to walk into any Best Buy or Fry's and walk out with the Futurama Vol. 4 box set. There's no gray area involved. There's no "umm, we think it's coming in later this week," or "you'd better pre-order now because we're only getting 10 copies and they'll probably sell out." On the other hand, DOOM 3, arguably the biggest PC release in two years, is about to come out, and most stores I've talked to have no idea exactly what day or time they'll have it on shelves, or if they'll have enough supply to keep up with demand. Sadly, this is par for the course for videogames, at least here in So Cal.

Why is this? Music and DVD releases come out they day they're advertised, and yet there's still an incredible amount of vagueness that surrounds videogame releases. This has kind of irked me for a while -- does anyone have any insight as to why this is? Is there something inherent to videogames that makes it impossible for releases to be coordinated the same way as music and DVD's?

The alternative is to hold games after completion for an agreed upon streetdate. That Best Buy store might already have Futurama in now but isn't allowed to sell it until that date (probably not realistic but many stores get there DVDs up to 2 to 3 weeks in advance but must hold them until stree date). Under the current system "street date" isn't set until the game is gold and even then its a ship date not an in store date.

For it to work in Doom 3's case the streetdate would have to be after August 3rd- probably August 10th. That way all retailers, whether they ship it overnight or via regular ground, would have it in stores. Under the current system stores that Fed Ex most games, like EB and Gamestop, will receive Doom 3 before stores that don't pay for overnight like Best Buy.

There are some opposite examples- Microsoft has already set Nov 9 as the date Halo 2 ships and you can be pretty damn confident it will make that date. Some stores will likely receive it a week or more in advance but be prohibited from selling until the 9th.

I think what he's asking, or what I would ask if it's not what he's asking, is why do we always have a shipping date for a video game release, while movies and CDs always have on the shelf dates. New DVDs? Almost always out on a Tuesday, the Best Buy ad will generally say "Available Tuesday The Whateverth." New video games, nearly always ship on a Tuesday, and are never in stores until Wednesday. Now it's not like it's a surprise any more, we all know that with rare exception, a game will end up in the store on Wednesday, but that doesn't stop the Tuesday dates from being the ones tagged on to all promotion or discussion of an upcoming release. So why do they give us that shipping date crap?

Kevin Grey

So why do they give us that shipping date crap?

Because different stores opt for different ship methods so in order for a publisher to give a guaranteed "in-store" date they would have to set a hard-limit street date well after the ship-date. The alternative to the current system of ship-dates is to get the game later at the cost of guaranteeing it will be in on that date at just about every store that carries the product.

Like I said before, those DVDs and CDs that are *always* in on the Tuesday of release probably arrived at the store a week or more before hand but the store was prohibited from selling it due to street date agreements. With most games, you can buy it as soon as it comes into the store. Unfortunately that date varies by the store and even by the game. EB used to overnight practically every game but recently has been opting for ground shipping on games from smaller publishers.

I was with a friend in line at a local GameStop, the 3 people ahead of me picked up the game. as well as my friend. The $20 price kept coming up as the primary motivator to buy.

Hopefully ESPN will get the market penetration they're looking for. It was kinda cool that the salesperson asked everyone if they wanted to preorder Madden and everyone was already on the list.

I wonder how profitable they can be at that level. It certainly seems to be a masterstroke this time as they are definitely getting a lot of notice. I'm curious if that will change next year if they go back to full price.

Yes, you can. I don't have my copy yet, but last year's allowed you to go into the options somewhere and select which roster you wanted to use. The default roster the game ships with is always there unless you overwrite the default (which can be resolved by erasing your saved file on the hard drive.)
