Anyone remember this game? No, not the new warhammer *Dawn* of war game. Rites of War is an old SSi game based on the Panzer General 2 engine. I was visiting a store that sells second-hand PC games, a rare gem among game stores these days, and I found a copy of this game in it's original box as good as new for only 50 kr, ~6$ US. So I'm happy that I've managed to find a game I haven't seen in stores in years and generally feeling good about myself when I come home only to find that the game won't install under XP. Figures. I knew it could be an issue, it always can with older games, but so far I've had no luck finding some way to work around it. Compatability mode didn't do it and Google can't seem to find *anything* related.

So, unless anyone here can help me this game will just sit in it's box and look pretty on my bookshelf.

Is it a dos game? Have you tried dosbox?

It's a win95/98 game. So no DOSbox I'm afraid.

Strange coincidence, I ordered a second copy of this gem off ebay last week as my old copy had install problems (a bad file apparentely).

My new copy installs correctly but wont play the game so i have to swap out to my old copy to play :)

I too am using XP, I can only assume the game has some weird cd sectors of copy protection which makes it a tad flakey?

Wacky stuff but worth it.

I could not get the thing to run properly on my old 98 maachine when it was released and it became one of the few games I have ever returned. Maybe the only one.

I've got it going under 98SE, but I had to do turn down my hardware graphics acceleration a notch or two. One big reason I've avoided upgrading to XP is because of all the problems it creates with running old games.

For some reason the installer just kicked in, right after I had shut down my bittorrent client, a couple of hours after I had tried to install it. Good thing I never took out the cd from the drive. So, umm, if anyone else has my problem, it really pays to shut down *all* other applications before you go looking for reasons why your programs won't install.

Anyway, the game installs properly now, and that's all that's important.
