For crying out loud. Only in California can you be video-taped commiting a crime, caught, stolen items confiscated... and then be exonerated of burglary. Vandalism! What's that? 100 hours of community service?

No offense to you folks living in California, but your court system is a national joke.

She also was convicted of Felony Grand Theft.

Burglary is a much tougher charge to prove - basically, it would mean that she went into the store with the express purpose of burglarizing it. There's plenty of evidence - seeing as how she indeed bought some items and gave her credit card - that she didn't. Enough for reasonable doubt.

She is, however, guilty of Felony Grand Theft as well as Vandalism. It seems like a pretty fair verdict.

I haven't really followed the case too much, but did she actually leave the store with the stolen goods?

It is rather amazing though. That's $5500 in merchandise she had. If I stuck my hand into a 7-11 cash register and grabbed a few hundred dollars I'd probably do some jail time.

My deepest apologies to the CA Qt3'ers. I read an early release of the story that was pulled from Yahoo!. It didn't mention the outcome of the Grand Theft charge, only the other two counts.

I'm still suffering from OJ shock, I guess. Just when I thought I was over it.

Again, I'm sorry for the premature rant.

The verdict sounds pretty fair to me. I thought she would be convicted of some but not all charges. The sentencing should be pretty interesting. I expect her to get probation, community service and a fine. Every time I see her in a picture and imagine myself as a juror, I can't see myself pushing for jail time. It would be like throwing a lamb into a lion's den.

"I haven't really followed the case too much, but did she actually leave the store with the stolen goods?"

Yea, while watching MSNBC and the pundits yakking about this(even though the fed had just cut rates by .5, and we had just had this thing called elections...boy what priorities our country has) they kept showing video tape of here pretty clearly in the act. As soon as she left he store they nabbed her.

Norm MacDonald had the best post OJ line I though. On SNL:

"This just in! It is now legal to commit double homocide in the state of California!"

Aside from OJ, the California criminal courts are pretty hardcore these days. The US Supreme Court just considered a challenge to our three strikes sentencing law: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/06/national/06SCOT.html?todaysheadlines

As noted in that article, there are 344 people in California prisons doing life for third strike petty theft. The state has moved from a goal of rehabilitating crimimals to one of incapacitating them.

I would be happy to hand out a little punishment to Winona if need be. Just ask my wife and past girlfriends....it would be punishment. Ba-dum-bum!!!!

I don't think you're allowed to kill gays in California. That's Wyoming you're thinking of.

Hey, I thought the joke was that Bruce Geryk is gay! When did I get lumped in, too?

How 'bout that game last night? Could someone hand me the skill saw? Also, do these socks go with this flannel shirt and has anyone seen my bowling ball?

Also, do these socks go with this flannel shirt
A real man, i.e. a non-gay straight type of man, wouldn't even think about whether or not the socks go with the flannel shirt.

Coordinating socks w/shirt=gay

You've just been outed. Turn in your guy card.

I sentence Winona Ryder to 100 hours of community service on top of my willy. I think the courts will agree...

I thought that there was something in your constitution about cruel and unsatisfying punishment. :P

Since Ms. Ryder was convicted of a felony, is she eligible to vote in California elections? I believe this question would default to Qt3's California counsel, Supertanker.

I believe the Constitution requires that convicted felons can't vote. I don't know, however, if there are any provisions exempting Hollywood celebrities...

No doubt they've lobbied for it.

No, it's set by state legislatures.

Felons can vote again once their sentence and/or parole are complete. http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_faq.htm

In another example of why I love her more each day, my wife said, "Winona should be sent to prison and forced to make lesbian movies. Winona Ryder in - Hard Time!"
