Pretty badass F.E.A.R. movie... I have heard about this game before but was never excited about it until I saw this movie.

give it a download:

You can download the higher-res version from GameSpot if you click the link, but maybe that's a for-pay thing only, not sure.

Curious about people's reactions.

In Monolith We Trust. I do, anyway. I bet FEAR will kick the living $hit out of Doom3 in every way imaginable except for l33t f/x.

Watched the large res version on gamespot and it's pretty impressive. Mostly the dust/smoke that gets tossed up and all the glass and computers shattering realistically. Toss in the matrix bullet time and you can run in between and around the falling debris. A tired but still neat effect. Also big explosions cause the same distortion effect as seen in the original matrix... really could do with out that.

Looks like it's ready to ship, though that's just one level obviously.

They need to upgrade the grenades though, the player was tossing them right and left and nobody, I mean nobody, died from them.

you saw the large version and didn't post linkage to it? shame on you.

I agree with the Matrix effects... too overdone nowadays.

I thought the grenades were more concussive type grenades than actual damage dealing ones.

Graphics are very, very spiffy, but as I watched, I still felt kind of 'meh' -- I think I'm getting really FPSed out. I figure I'll pick up Doom3 and Half-Life2 if for no other reason than because they're marquee sequels (not buying them is akin to not going to see StarWars ep3, which I'll go see primarily because it's Star Wars, I guess, but not because I'm expecting a great movie).

I think, perhaps, what D3 and HL2 have up on this one (from what little I've seen) is a much stronger sense of atmosphere -- D3 is going for horror, HL2 is aiming for a 1984-esque dystopian future thing, the FEAR trailer feels much more generic action movie to me.

Actually, the other FPS that really has me intrigued is STALKER -- the 3D engine certainly looks competent, but the setting has some really spooky potential.

I wouldn't be surprised if this 'survival horror shooter' genre becomes the next big thing for FPS games. You won't see me complainin'!

I want to see more of the hand-to-hand combat stuff from FEAR. That video had a brief flash of kicks and such, and that was pretty cool. More!

In Monolith We Trust. For Kate Arthur We Weep. :(

I hope we see another N.O.L.F. game. Preferably one that doesn't involve Contract J.A.C.K.

How bout a real Blood sequel... like the first Blood. Blood 2 was ok, but nothing near cool as Blood!

BTW just watched that video... wow pretty cool. Monolith is so underrated!

etc

It's at at www.gamespot.com on the frontpage. I don't know if you can download it without a subscription (which I have) and I am pretty sure you can't download it without their secure download bullshit. Unless you really want to see the hi res version I would wait because their kontiki app is crap.

Well from what I gather FEAR is supposed to go pretty heavily into the realms of horror too. There were only a few elements of it in that trailer though.

The second clip is up. Much creepier stuff in this one and it's also way more mature, so parental guidance is strongly advised.

Parental guidance wasn't advised in the other one with all the bloody, dismembered bodies, constant gunfire and eviscerated corpses lying about? :?

If they get the gameplay right and they don't skimp on their original feature set STALKER is going to be huge. An FPS with RPG elements - I can't wait !

Blood 2 was great, taffer! Anyways, Monolith did receive tons of game ideas from fans for a Blood 3 game, basically the majority of them coming down to a prequel, where you played Caleb's rise to being Tchnerybog's(?) right hand man. It could be cool too since he was born in the 1840's and grew up as a gunfighter in the American West during the Civil War era.

But alas.

Monolith does not own the rights to Blood or it's sequel.

Blood was fanastic. It scored high on my "Most Memorable Gaming Moments Meter".

Re: 2nd FEAR movie. WHo the hell is talking? Is it a senior guy at HQ looking through a camera on the player character's helmet or something or is it the player character?!

There's a little icon in the upper left that tells you who's talking. Most of the time it's your team leader, the guy with the Chicago accent.

Hmm, up until the guy in the elevator shows up I thought the player was solo. I didn't see anybody else around.

Me neither!

The first clip didn't impress me that much but the second one did. Definitely has some atmosphere going on in that one.

Well I saw it at E3, and I gotta say, these crappy over-compressed streaming videos are junk, man!

Seriuosly, take a quality feed and compress a 640x480 stream with WMV9 or DivX at about 1 megabit/sec. Use dual-pass encoding. The demo is, what, 20 minutes tops? That would be 150MB plus audio. Figure easily under 200MB.

Then give that file to fileplanet, fileshack, filerush, etc. They'll be happy to host it.

I'm not sure why game companies keep releasing these crummy videos. Excessively low bitrates, poor resolution, and bad encoders and encoding parameters (quicktime? you gotta be kidding me!). All so they can release five minutes of gameplay footage as a 20MB file. If they'll download 20MB, they'll download 30 or 40, and your game will look a LOT better.

Adam - lobby for a good high-res, *HIGH BITRATE* version of this to go out! Maybe after whatever Gamespot "exlusive" has expired.

Oh, and as for the content -

I think everything about FEAR seems great, except for your team leader guy's voice. That Chicago accent...i just can't possibly take it seriously. It conjurs up visions of fat, dougnut-eating cops, or Da Superfans thing from SNL ("Daaaaa Bears Da Bears Da Bears"). If we're some super-elite team of ultra badasses sent to clean up when special forces guys get whacked, shouldn't the dude at the monitor be some experienced, hard-edged old vet that has seen a lot of action or something?

It just doesn't fit.

The rest of it, sign me the F up! :)

Finished watching the third video over on gamespot... total The Ring ripoff. Well minus the automated weaponry =)

Not that that's a bad thing. The little girl in that movie gave me the willies, and that's not an easy thing to do.
