I know its a long way off but IGN has some videos of Battlefield 2. Graphics look very good, the last video shows some of that Commander stuff (think commander station from Tribes) that will be new for battlefield. Looks like they also put in some realtime physics and ragdoll stuff, which is becomming standard in all FPS games.

I just hope they improve gameplay as much as the graphics. BF Vietnam was dissapointing in that the game play was pretty much the same. They should atleast put in some Push style maps like that one from Desert Combat. Hopefully some objective maps, with stuff like get the hostages etc...

I'm not sure I want to grab it yet, but can you tell if they've increased teh view distance? graphically that's about the only thing I want.

From the looks in the videos I'd say no. Most of the content in the video is in a city so you can't tell, but there are a couple shots of jets in the first video. In these shots the view distance looks pretty much the same. Though seeing as how the game will be out in 2005 this could all change.

I hate movies that don't represent the gameplay. For example, will the game include jet pilot who happily orbits the battlefield for 10 minutes, patiently waiting to be called in? This makes it look like Battlefield Machinima than anything else.

I've read that they've put a lot more emphasis on teamplay this time around, and in interresting ways. One of the big problems you had with Battlefield was little cooperation in public games, as most people were all about kills. The planecamping, the multi-passenger vehicles speeding off with only the driver, engineers who refuse to repair smoking vehicles and those motherfucking snipers who can't be bothered select the binoculars for ONE GODDAMNED SECOND and spot for artillery...all of these factors would tend to limit the Battlefield experiance to familiar routines.

People (such as myself) screamed ad-naseum for relatively minor enhancements that would improve teamwork (awarding points for team-oriented actions like repairing, first aid, ect.) and now it seems that they've agreed. Also, the previously mentioned Commander Mode sounds neato. The game uses some sort of master server for stat-tracking and awards players with higher rank based on their performance. Gaining these higher ranks will unlock privileges like access to elite classes (special forces, the Squad Commander), special weapons and different vehicles. While I'm sure there will be an initial backlash from die-hard gamers and smacktards alike, I think limiting access to specific vehicles (such as Fighter Jets) will help forge a rudamentary level of respect for teamplay, not to mention reduce general idiocy like spawncamping.

So yeah, I can actually invision a scenario where I dial in an airstrike...and someone heeds the call! Add to that the fact that I will probably be painting the target with a laser, and can actually adjust the target after the ordinance has been dropped, which is totally rad. The icing on the cake is of course the ragdoll physics on the poor cameljockey whom Maverick and I just tag-teamed; he's going to be starring in the screenshot of the week.

I know that like all Battlefield games the aircraft will be in use at all times. People just love to fly. When your in a jet your usually just looking around for easy kills to strafe. So while looking around its most likely that if someone paints a target will mark an easy kill for the jet fighter, who will most likely go after it. Since most pilots like racking up easy kills, it will probably be common for aircraft to respond to gound target painting requests.

Of course how often players will be bothered to paint targets is unknown, we all know how well they do in calling artillery. As long as once a target is painted its very easy for an aircraft to attack, then often aircraft will respond.

I agree that BF shines when you actually have a team who knows how to do the little things- calling for artillery, moving spawn points, actually giving aircover, and repairing vehicles. I've had some magical moments with a good team, but sadly more often than not, I end up with a bunch of teammates waiting in line at the helo spwan points for thier turn on the chopper ride.
I almost never bother with planes and helos anymore. The ground pounding in BF:V is awesome. Of course with the exception of really good pilots the scoreboard leaders are almost always ground pounders.
A commander will be a great addition, but like Tribes it will be interesting if anyone listens to the commander.
Unlockables- I'm all for that. I'm also all for a pilot class that has suckage for a weapon- knife and pistol.
I do wish you could pick your secondary equpment. The bouncing betties should be available to other kits instead of grenades. The gun they are matched with is prolly the least used weapon in the game. Sorry, but a sniper rifle with no scope in BF:V is almost useless, at least with people able to take you out at the same range with an M60 or M16.
