Qt3 Games Podcast: is that a tactic in your pocket?

Owen Faraday from Pocket Tactics joins us to talk about the best iOS games of 2012, as well as news from CES. We also consider how XCOM is newly ripe for another playthrough, what the heck Zero Escape is, whether Sleeping Dogs will stand the test of time, and how Bridge Constructor Playground might be the most fun on the iOS since your Campus Life sorority dinged level 10.

I love Pocket Tactics. It’s great. But all its good work has now been dwarfed by the gift Owen has given us in this podcast: the Qualcomm CeS keynote. It is INSANE. Like “Pump the world’s dozen craziest lunatics full of crystal meth, talk them into a blender and mash the button ’til it breaks” crazy.

For this gift, Owen, we are truly thankful.

I’m interested in VLR, but I’d have to read 999 first. The main thing that’s holding me back is that the text speed is supposed to be very slow. That made me quit Phoenix Wright halfway through when I tried to read that. It’s for the 3DS too btw.

Another touted Visual Novel called Steins;Gate(yup) is coming to the Vita in Japan soon. It’s too bad the niche status of the genre is combined with a gargantuan localization task, or we’d be seeing more of these.

So Tom, I assume you’re going to be following up your niche Vita coverage by delving into DJMAX Technika Tune to prove K-pop is not all Gagnam Style before tackling giant ants in EDF 2017? Perhaps Orgarhythm which seems to be 3D Patapon-ish or Silent Hill: Diablo? In any case, keep fighting the good fight!

Big fan of Pocket Tactics, it seems to be THE only iOS/Android gaming site worth looking at. Mainly because the games covered are the games I’m constantly searching for on the app stores amidst a deluge of trivial novelty tat!

It was discussed that there just weren’t any Android exclusives, this might be true for the bigger boardgame games, but in the field of wargaming Android has a lot more to offer than the iOS currently does (even with the likes of Battle Academy and Battle of the Bulge now available).

Take a look at these Android wargaming exclusives

Victor Reijkersz’ Small General: Eastern Front
    http://www.vrdesigns.nl/?page_id=402

Joni Nuutinen’s Wargame series (Conflict and American Civil War)
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Joni+Nuutinen

DK simulations Wargame series( WWII, Napoleonic and ACW)
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=DK+Simulations&hl=en_GB

    Populous Romanus series
    http://www.populusromanus.com/

All of these games are just not available on the iOS platform. Comparing the two with respect to wargaming, the Android is positively brimming with “proper” wargaming goodies! There’s your exclusive! Primarily the reason I took a step away from Apple’s Angry Birds platform, was so I could enjoy the grognard stuff going on over at the ‘Droid. :)

Nice work, spelk! You made me wish I had an Android device! :)

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Virtue’s Last Reward suffers for having not played 999. All I know about 999 is what I skimmed on Wikipedia, and I haven’t felt like I’m missing out on any references or backstory in Virtue’s Last Reward.

As for the text speed, I’m pretty happy with it. You can X-button through it at your own pace or you can put it on autoplay, which lets you sit back and watch it like a cutscene (despite the odd fact that there’s no voice acting for the main character).

I’m already on the case for EDF, and I only just found out that there’s a Silent Hill Diablo-a-like, so I don’t think I’ll be able to hold out for very long. Fortunately, I don’t know enough about DJMA Technika Tune K-Pop Extravaganzapalooza to tempt me. Yet!

Yeah, that was better than I could have hoped for. Thanks, Owen!

    Listening now! w00t!

Wait, it’s weird hearing McMaster without being able to talk to him. Gah.

There’s at least one good iOS game from a major publisher: Rayman Jungle Run. It reduces platforming to a single essential element (jumping), and it is fantastic.

I think BotB is wargame of the year on iOS, but Battle Academy is a worthy contender. It makes me think of Steel Panthers Lite. It doesn’t have kids with pink hair and robot suits driving around in tanks, though, so I doubt Bruce would like it.
