Qt3 Games Podcast: games within games

Are you busy training up your “don’t-call-me-Pokemon!” battle pets in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria? We take a break from not playing the World of Warcraft expansion to consider other games within games. Then we consider our options for the Wii U launch, how to get the most out of Torchlight 2, which platform is best for Borderlands 2, and how long it’s going to take for this whole Guild Wars 2 thing to blow over.

What game was the first to do the game-within-a-game? I remember Space Quest having slots or some form of gambling.

The first one I remember was the gambling mini-game in the exploration / adventure game Dun Darach (Gargoyle Games) back in 1985. Reviewers at the time made a big deal about it, but I’m not sure if it was the earliest example. I’m sure the first games that you played while waiting for the main game to load also deserve a mention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invade-a-Load). That was a major technical innovation 25 years ago, although I can’t say I miss having to wait 10 minutes to load a game no matter what amusing diversions they used to keep us entertained.

Were you aware that GW2 email is actually pigeonmail? ;) Every time you get a new mail message, a little pigeon flies over and gives it to you and then flies off. Other players can see it too.

Major Havoc in 1983 had a tiny little Breakout clone to play while your ship was flying to the next level.
