Qt3 Games Podcast: eight-legged freak

It’s a busy week with McMaster’s new Kickstarter in effect. Go here to check out Cap’n Patch! Is it any coincidence that McMaster is making a game about a spider and is also terrorizing the Bug Princess 2 leaderboards? In other news, Secret World announces an upcoming celebrity appearance sure to excite any fan of the hit movie Armageddon, Orcs Must Die 2 is going to force you to stop using that same trap combo over and over again, and you don’t have to buy the new Payday: The Heist DLC to enjoy it. Plus some Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders II, Hybrid, Modern Warfare 3 chaos mode, and Jamestown.

No fair talking shmups without me. Jason if you are liking death smiles on the 360, there was also a US release of Akai Katana released a few months ago that can be had for around 20 bucks.

30 second guide to Dodonpachi Resurrection scoring:
-shooting enemies drives up the chain counter and fills your hyper meter
    - collecting bees when they are green adds to your hyper meter
-chain counter decreases when you aren’t killing stuff or you don’t have your laser shot focused on a large enemy
-engaging hyper mode makes you much stronger.
    - while in hyper mode shooting enemies with your normal shot cancels bullets and adds them to your chain. Using your hyper laser pushes back enemy purple lasers and also adds to your chain
    - there is a snowballing multiplier based on how high your chain counter is, but this multiplier is only in effect when your hyper meter is full

So, the basic strategy is to get your chain up in the early part of the stage by engage hyper mode to cancel bullets. After the mid boss, you want to cash your chain in by maxing out the hyper meter but not using it.

You can also play Dodonpachi Resurrection on your 360 by picking up the UK version on ebay for around 25-30 bucks. It will play on US consoles. It comes with two arrange modes, the original arcade version, and a novice mode.

PS Tom – I just beat your Bug Princess 2 Black Label stage 1 score by 10 million and your stage 2 score by 22 million.

I am so excited for Cap’n Patch. I love rhythm games, and I’ve been desperate for a good one on iOS. Come on, people – spider pirates! Give McMaster money!

Great to hear more about shooters! Apart from Bayonetta they’re basically the sole reason I’ll end up getting a 360 eventually.

You really should get on Jamestown Tom. Keyboard is actually quite good for controls, as long as it’s a good keyboard. The game takes basically any input device by default though, makes multiplayer really easy. I played with a wii classic controller through an adapter no problem. The multiplayer is pretty good even with a wide gap in skill between the players; even a very good player can have fun messing around with weaker ships etc. The real meat for most people interested in the genre will probably be single player though.

About the increasing the difficulty for scoring purposes; Jamestown is exactly like that, with leaderboards shared between difficulty settings. Still though, I think there’s only one high score recorded played on the hardest setting for the arcade mode, the rest are from the step below. On singular levels the top scores are all on the hardest mode however. While I can barely pass 4/5 of the levels on the hardest setting, I’m getting pretty good placings on the step below, which is fun. Still can’t even beat the arcade mode on it though. Also; this game has a mechanic where you an purposefully stop a combo for an invulnerability period(instead of bombs in most games), this makes playing harder difficulties for survival extremely different than playing already conquered levels for score. Especially on the hardest difficulty which has special bullets that are no longer stopped by starting a combo…

I realize I am repeating myself from another front page posting, but have you guys ever plumbed the depths of Xbox Live Indie Games for shooters? Because there really are some good ones – though I can’t see my list until I go home and read them because I can’t remember names for crap.

  • tomchick

Right now, my dalliance with these kinds of games is strictly limited to the iPad. I can’t imagine being satisfied with anything less than 100% 1:1 direct finger control!

But I am open to trying Jamestown when I’m ready to move on from my current unhealthy addiction to Cave shooters. And if you think there are some really good Xbox Live Indie Games, I’d certainly be interested in hearing about them. Is that part of Xbox Live even still around…?

  • tomchick

Well of course you did. You’re a shmup child prodigy!

Although I’d love to hear how you beat it by such a wide margin. It seems to me like setting the difficulty to hell, staying close to your targets, and not getting hit will yield about 15 million points in stage 1 original mode. How can you beat that by 10 million? What are you doing to get your score so much higher?

Wait, we are talking original mode, aren’t we? That’s the one I’ve been slaving away at to beat McMaster’s score of 16 million. If you’re talking maniac mode, then, yeah, I can completely understand how the scores will vary widely based on how you play the multiplier, and I’d be very disappointed if you weren’t thrashing my scores soundly!

  • tomchick

Hmm, I’m wondering if Dodonpachi isn’t going to work for me. I’ve been playing it and I think between the artwork — ugh, robots and tanks — and the fact that the scoring gimmick is that you can basically shoot away some of the bullets, I’m about ready to declare it minor Cave.

  • tomchick

When will Jamestown be on the iPad?!?!?!????!!??

  • anon

Shoot 1up is supposed to be good. Its gimmick is that you collect a fleet of ships.

  • angrycoder

nope, I am in original mode on BL. I think my score was 24 million.

Black Label original is all about aggressive play, you need to be almost point blanking enemies to get the most gems. Also, when you are using the laser shot, make sure you are toggling the shot off or switching back to shot to absorb the gems. Also, when you have something on screen that will cancel bullets when you kill it, you want to lay off your shot for as long as possible to let the screen fill with bullets so you can cancel them for big points.

All this button wrangling is harder on the ipad of course, which is why it is easier to survive but harder to score.

I only knew what Jason McMaster looked like from his little avatar in the comments: a short-haired guy in a suit and bright blue tie. Seeing him rocking long hair akin to that other Jason McMaster fellow was quite a surprise.

Best wishes to you and Two Lonely Captains, McMaster!
