Qt3 Games Podcast: interview with a mechwarrior

This week Rob “Chaplin” Harvey, an actual mechwarrior who was at an actual Mechwarrior Online tournament, joins us to talk about the upcoming free-to-play shooter and whether or not he won the tournament. We also take a gander at Mechwarrior Tactics, the upcoming free-to-play strategy game. Basically, it’s all things Mechwarrior this week. Because there’s not much else to talk about in the middle of summer. Oh, wait, there is! Summoner Wars, the Oculus, Telltale’s Walking Dead games, Orcs Must Die 2, and Smite. But other than those things and the resurgence of Mechwarrioring, there’s not much to talk about.

McMaster I want to say something that may hurt your feelings but I hope you take it to heart and maybe actually work on it. Your voice is very podcast unfriendly. Its not the tonal quality but your energy level. You end up not sounding very engaged and in turn I don’t feel very engaged. Listen to the energy and elocution of Tom. That is what you want to go for.
So lets hear some speech that is a little more clear with a little more energy! Thanks McMaster.

Hey! No offense taken. I appreciate the comment and will work on it. I do, actually, have a “radio voice” from working a bit in radio years ago, but I detest it. I will, however try to get a bit more energy. Though, fair warning, I’m close to going into a coma a large portion of the time, so excited for me does kind of sound like Eeyore after he had a pot of coffee.

Disagree, I like his sleepy drawl, and having a distinctive voice is a plus. Also, Humor > Energy. But McMaster, if you could be a more of a team player and make a pleasant low pitched humming noise when Tom and other guests are talking to better set off their cadences, now that would be cool.

Bah! McMaster will be McMaster. I wouldn’t like it any other way, I tell ya!

Also, Mechwarrior Online just posted the podcast on their Facebook page. :)

  • Rob Harvey

I guess this means they liked it and I successfully compartmentalized experiences while not stepping over any NDA lines. Fhew!

I can understand the Hindu group’s reaction to the game. I think the most basic reason why religions don’t like their figures in video games is because the players can control them, humans are supposed to get influenced by gods and shouldn’t be able to control the gods. So even if like Tom said eastern religions are less sensitive about depictions of their gods, I feel like this aspect of control might be what is prompting their reaction. Also the mixing of old and new gods, with included any Abrahamic religious, could give this group the idea that their gods are being singled out as being out of date and as inconsequential as Greek and Norse gods are today.

That said I don’t think that the gods should removed, but working with this group could only be good for the game and the producers. They have already taken down one image that portrayed Kali in a somewhat sexual light.

The Hindu reaction is also very mellow compared to the firestorm that would occur if Jesus was in the game.

Omigosh, you can’t just mention having a radio voice and then not use it from time to time. I demand a little radio voice in next week’s podcast!

I’ll try to bring us up to “drive time” this coming week ;)

Personally I don’t think it is worth respecting religious figures, including Jesus, to the point where we are removing them as ever being an option for a playable character in any game.
Now I do think respect should be show in your expression of that character, not debasing it for the mere pleasure of debasement. If it doesn’t harm artistic expression then working with a religion to make sure your depiction is tasteful is fine and expected.
I think the world is a much more interesting place when creative people can work freely and feel that some subjects are off-limits.
