Qt3 Games Podcast: Day Z, Day Z, give me your answer do

The mellifluous Jon Rowe joins us for a special 3D edition of the podcast: Day Z, Defender Chronicles 2, and, of course, Diablo III. As our official Day Z correspondent, Jon walks us through the various ethical and moral dilemmas you’ll face in this recent mod for Arma II. For instance, is it okay to shoot a guy in the face to take his beans? And what should you do when you see someone’s flare lying on the ground? And is it a good idea to hang around on the beach to try to make friends?

Speaking of trailers with dubstep — well ok, almost dubstep — the Trackmania devs are making a shooter, which they’re cutely calling Shootmania:

A fast competitive shooter that isn’t F2P, progression based. With LAN support, in 2012, oh my! Going with a non-violent tronish style is cool too.

Diablo 3: You shouldn’t have to waste tons of hours to get to something somewhat challenging. Really bad design that can’t even be cheated around because of their online DRM. Guessing it’s a carryover mentality from WoW, where they need to pad out the game to keep subscriptions up.

I’m younger than you guys, but I’m not about to accept a future where every game is server based. To quote Epic’s Tim Willits:

“Diablo 3 will make everyone else accept the fact you have to be
connected. If you have a juggernaut, you can make change. I’m all for
that. If we could force people to always be connected when you play the
game, and then have that be acceptable, awesome. In the end, it’s better
    for everybody.”

    Screw that.

Oh, and yeah, the Arma pack has been hovering around the top 3 spots for a long time on Steam now, while the standalone needed for DayZ has been in the top 20. Steam Stats give >5000 concurrent players, but it’s not a Steamworks game so that’s Steam customers only. On Amazon it was the digital top seller, and they’ve actually ran out of keys.

Oh, Tom, Tom, Tom.  No real time board games?

Check out Cheapass Games’ Falling and Brawl (older) and Tasty Minstrel’s JAB: Realtime Boxing (brand new).

Okay, so these are card games, but you included card games in your generalization, I could tell from the tone of your voice.

100k unique characters in DayZ now :)

Ha, you got me, Nightgaunt. Actually, as I was saying that, I thought of that godawful realtime co-op spaceship game, Red Alert, where you have limited time to do something.

  • Nightgaunt

Oh, duh, of course Red Alert!  And Galaxy Trucker (by the same designer, but much less stupid-insane) has a realtime element.  Oh, and there’s Space Dealer, where each player has three (four?) sand timers they use to determine when any given action is done.  Research timer is done!  Draw a card!  Flying to that red planet… Flip my starship timer!

Boardgamegeek has 71 pages of realtime games.  Wow, 71 pages of Tom’s Wrong.  That’s even longer than that one review you were so wrong about.

Fact-checking ruins podcasts, but Rocket is from NZ, I think. (So maybe the mod’s name is Day Zed?) Also, he does have a job with Bohemia Interactive.

We have started a Neuroshima Hex league, boys, if you want to get your feet wet! With your blood!
