Qt3 Games Podcast: the GDC debrief

Soren Johnson (not literally pictured) is the ruthlessly calculating mastermind behind one of the most hideously effective time sinks since actual civilization: Civilization IV. You might think such a fellow is too high-brow and dignified for the likes of us. We’ll be the judge of that on this week’s episode of the Qt3 Games Podcast. Tune in for a recap of the best of this year’s GDC, a little Mass Effect 3 talk, a discussion of the latest Kickstarter projects, and a scientific test that determines whether Soren Johnson is, in fact, a nerd.

Plants vs Zombies taught me how to play RTS games.  The idea of timings and build orders made no sense to me until I stopped to think about how I was playing PvZ. The timing of the first zombie is always the same so I can get x flowers out. If I plant a potato mine when it is n squares in it will be ready as soon as the zombie hits.

I’m in the middle of ME3 so I’m worried about spoilers.  But I’ll check it out soon.  Man, I have too many games to play right now.  Barely scratched Conquest of Elysium 3 and Crusader Kings 2, both of which are full fledged addiction fodder themselves, but ME3 has sucked me right in.  I don’t think I’ve ever played a game, I’ll call it that even though it’s not actually the game mechanic elements that drive this, that drew me in so fully before.  Having so many characters and such a rich setting built up over the last two games and brought back so masterfully into a grand finale makes for something very special.  And I haven’t even touched my evil FemShep yet, but my all American hero DefaultShep is a blast to play.  So much context and minor interactions that build on the past and each other.  Epic storytelling, for games at least, has been redefined.

Then there’s the clever use of co-op multiplayer, the smartphone apps, and so on that further build this sense of a vast cocoon around the experience.  I’m hermetically sealed in the MEverse…

That was Qui-Gon who attempted a jedi mind trick on Watto, not Obi-Wan! Though in either case the end result would have been the same, Toydarians being Toydarians and all.

You’ve really never seen Sullivan’s Travels? It’s excellent – holds up well.
