Qt3 Movie Podcast: The Son

Since one of us has moved out of the country, we’ll be doing shorter podcasts on older movies time to time. For instance, this week, we watched an old French movie from 2002, except that it’s from Belgium. And we happen to think it’s pretty darn awesome. Watch The Son (it’s on Netflix instant view!) and join us. Or join us at the 29-minute mark for a nice high-brow 3×3: our favorite fat kids in movies.

Who moved where? If you don’t mind me asking

  • tomchick

Kellywand just started a job in Canada.  Yeah, Canada.  When America can’t keep Kellywand, its position in the world is slipping.

  • Michael Patterson

Taha screwed up the joke. He was supposed to ask, “Where is Kelly Wand going to receive training?”

I’m totally down with watching great “old” movies. Like Tom, I couldn’t get through The Son the first time, so I’ll have to try again. If you like The Son, I highly recommend the Dardennes’ next film, L’Enfant.

  • tomchick

I definitely plan to track down some more Dardennes movies and more Olivier Gourmet.

And, yeah, now Kellywand won’t have to tell us where he’s received his training.

I’m not sure I like living in an America without Kelly Wand

  • Christien Murawski

That sounds like a perfect title for a song from the sequel to Team America: World Police.

A job?  I thought writing movie synopses was his job.  Were you not paying him enough, Tom?

  • tomchick

Are you kidding? Me and Dingus paid him handsomely! If only Kellywand had told us earlier that he couldn’t pay his rent with movie trailer quotes.

Let me start out by saying that I enjoy the podcasts thoroughly. Still, this is the second time I’ve heard you describe the long car shot in Children of Men as mostly CGI when I don’t think it was. Here is a little making of feature:

The motorcycle is CGI but the rest appears to have been camera trickery. Also, in regards to fat kids, Chunk is not overrated. Sloth love Chunk.

I sorely want to hear the long-form opinion of someone I’m familiar with on “Martyrs”. My movie buff friend rented it to watch with me a couple months ago but hated it to the point of total silence on the matter. I wasn’t too fond of it either, but I think it deserves some small measure of discourse. Maybe a bonus podblast to make up for it?

  • tomchick

That would mean getting Dingus to watch it. I don’t think he’s ready.

But I agree with you, Ben. I’d love a longer form discussion on Martyrs, partly because there’s no reason I’m ever going to watch it a second time unless it’s to prepare for a podcast on it!

  • Christien Murawski

    I’m not afraid!
