September 26, 2011: wallet threat level green

FIFA 12, a Forumula 1 racing game, is out this week. And X-Men Destiny, a DIY mutant game from the creators of Too Human. And an RTS based on Game of Thrones from the creators of Bloodbowl. And a standalone follow-up to the fantasy dungeon sim Dungeons, called Dark Lord, from the creators of Dungeons. And finally the bundled remasters of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for the Playstation 3.

Don’t worry, next week could be a little brutal.

You’re not giving FIFA 12 enough credit. Especially since it’s the console RTS you’ve always been waiting for.  It’s just trapped in the shell of a soccer game.

I’ve ordered three of these games (FIFA, F1 and Game of Thrones), and am currently looking for a decent place to buy the Team Ico pack. So this is an expensive week for me. So… err, what’s out next week? Should I have saved my money?

  • Zeewolf

Rage! Jebus, Rage. Where did that come from?

  • Neuromancer

Also, Crysis 1 on consoles if you’re so inclined.

I’m ambivalent about a Game of Thrones RTS coming out.  On one hand, it could be cool.  On the other hand, my dream is for a Creative Assembly game called “Westeros: Total War”

Ah. Well, the only way you’ll get me to play an FPS on a console is if it’s console exclusive and likely to stay that way forever. For me, playing an FPS with a controller is a bit like walking in snow that’s knee high. I can do it, but I really need to make an extra effort and the destination had better be worth it. In this case, I visited the place before the snow came so I don’t need to wade in again. Err.. anyway.

Okay, granted, most people didn’t like Too Human (I did, but I’m weird like that), but Silicon Knights also did Eternal Darkness and Legacy of Kain, both of which are amazing. So X-Men Destiny strikes me as at least a potential wallet threat.

And the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus collection is a must buy for anyone who missed those games the first time around. (Less so for the rest of us, although I’ll snag it sooner or later.)

Wait, there are people who missed Ico and Shadow of the Colossus?  Inconceivable!

Also, Eternal Darkness and Legacy of Kain were a long time ago, Mr. Wiley.  That was a very different Silicon Knights.  Instead, my hope for the X-Men game is that SK took to heart some of the complaints about Too Human.

But it’s a spoooorts game.  I don’t wanna.  Waaaaah.  But, yeah, one of these days someone is going to sit me down to show me a soccer game as an RTS the way people have tried to get me to appreciate football and baseball as strategy games.  It just might work, Mike.

I know the writer on Legacy of Kain (and maybe Eternal Darkness? I dunno) left to join Naughty Dog, but are they really that different otherwise? Eternal Darkness and the later Legacy of Kain games were only a console generation back. It’s not like we’re reaching back to the glory days of the 16 bit era like we’d have to do for, e.g., a proper Sonic the Hedgehog game (am I right about that? I’ve never played any of them) or some people’s conception of the last good Final Fantasy.
