Frankly, this isn’t much of a life for a king, much less a guy who likes city builders. It’s Jarmusch slow and overly gated. And that’s not what city builders or dungeon hacks are all about. That’s what JRPGs are about: lots of dialog and waiting and watching cutscenes.

…even though it’s a faithful adaptation, it’s a technical disaster. The graphics are distilled down to a horrible, low-poly-count, ugly, washed-out morass. The special effects, from explosions to foliage to lighting, are almost bad enough to look like they were lifted from a PlayStation 2 game. What’s worse, the frame rate jerks and stutters, especially during frantic firefights. Quake Wars on the PlayStation 3 is damn near unplayable.

In many ways, the developers at Nerve Software don’t seem to “get” Quake Wars, particularly compared to the developers of the PlayStation 3 version. This is ironic, because Nerve Software has a history of working with id engines and Activision properties. But many important details of Quake Wars — details that are intact in the PS3 version created by another developer — have been streamlined out of the Xbox 360 port.
